Psychodynamic Counselling

What to expect?

What to Expect in Your First Therapy Session?

Starting therapy can feel daunting—especially if it’s your first time. It’s completely normal to feel nervous.

The little things might feel big right now. Let’s take the mystery out of it.

Is the First Session Actually Therapy?

No. Your first session is a consultation, not a full therapy session.  It’s a chance for us to:

  • Clarify what’s bringing you to therapy right now

  • Talk about your goals and what you hope to gain

  • Share a little of your personal background (only what feels right)

  • Answer your questions about how therapy works

  • Go over practical details: frequency, fees, confidentiality, and boundaries

  • See if we’re a good fit to work together

It’s about making sure we're on the same page. There’s no pressure to decide on the spot.

As a psychodynamic counsellor, I’m interested in how your past experiences—especially early relationships—may be influencing how you feel and relate to others today.  We’ll gently explore patterns that might be playing out unconsciously, so you can gain deeper insight and make lasting change.

I’ll also explain the limits of confidentiality, such as situations involving risk of serious harm or legal requirements.

What Happens After the First Session?

Take time to reflect. You can contact me afterward to discuss whether you’d like to begin regular sessions.

If we agree to work together, I’ll send a short agreement outlining our therapeutic contract.

I offer a free initial consultation—in person at The Leicester Centre for Psychodynamic Counselling, or online via video call.

The centre is a in a central location with good transport links and at on-street parking. I work with clients across the UK.
