What to Expect in Your First Psychodynamic Counselling Session

For many people, starting counselling can feel daunting—especially if it’s your first time.
Psychodynamic counselling focuses on understanding how past experiences shape current thoughts, feelings, and relationships.

This approach aims to understand the root causes of anxiety, relationship difficulties, low mood, self-doubt, and repeating patterns in your life — rather than focusing only on managing symptoms.
If you’re considering counselling, this page will help you understand how a first meeting works.

Is the First Session a Consultation?

Your first session is a consultation, not a full therapy session.  It’s a chance for us to:

  • Clarify what’s bringing you to therapy right now

  • Talk about your goals and what you hope to gain

  • Share a little of your personal background (only what feels right)

  • Answer your questions about how therapy works

  • Go over practical details: frequency, fees, confidentiality, and boundaries

  • See if we’re a good fit to work together

It’s about making sure we're on the same page. There’s no pressure to decide on the spot.

I offer a free initial consultation for psychodynamic counselling in Leicester or online across the UK.

As a psychodynamic counsellor, I’m interested in how your past experiences—especially early relationships—may be influencing how you feel and relate to others today.  We’ll gently explore patterns that might be playing out unconsciously, so you can gain deeper insight and make lasting change.

I’ll also explain the limits of confidentiality, such as situations involving risk of serious harm or legal requirements.

The consultation is scheduled at the same time and on the same day that regular sessions would take place.

Both the initial consultation and ongoing sessions are held at The Leicester Centre for Psychodynamic Counselling, in central Leicester with good transport links and on-street parking.

What Happens After the First Session?

Take time to reflect. You can contact me afterward to discuss whether you’d like to begin regular sessions.

If we agree to work together, I’ll send a short agreement outlining our therapeutic contract.
